Addressing the Biodiversity Paradox: Mismatch between the Co-Occurrence of Biological Diversity and the Human, Financial and Institutional Resources to Address Its Decline

Pressures are mounting for the adoption of a Global Biodiversity Framework that transforms conservation and sustainable use efforts worldwide. Underlying this challenge is biodiversity paradox: biological diversity predominantly concentrates in tropics, while human, institutional, financial resources primarily located at higher latitudes both north south. Addressing paradox requires expansion mobilization institutional around world. We outline model championed by IUCN Species Survival Commission (SSC) builds on Conservation Cycle (Assess-Plan-Act-Network-Communicate) recognizes most action occurs national or local level. Various strategies applied to end partners Reverse Red, global movement ignites strategic cooperation science-based ensure survival wild species ecosystems. The SSC contributes Red through two primary strategies: National Specialist Groups Centers Survival. By building existing expert networks catalyzing with established institutions, we aim significantly expand capacity implement level reverse negative trends indicated List Threatened Ecosystems.
